[VIRTUAL TRAINING] Analyzing the U.S. War on Drugs & Racist Drug Policies (CEUs)
09.09.25 - 9:30 am–12:30 pm
Topic: Harm reduction, Health & Racial Equity, Policies, Stigma, Training
Audience: Provider, Substance Use Services, Employees, Employers/worksites, PWUD, People in recovery, General public
This three-hour professional development module is intended to educate different service providers, community members, coalitions, and other entities on the War on Drugs and how it has fostered racialized drug policies in the 21st century. Like alcohol Prohibition in the early 1900s, drug prohibition has not only failed its mission but has made its mission impossible. This training will build off the previous module (Addressing Stigmas and Biases in Our Work) and will explore the history of the War on Drugs, while connecting it to the 3 different levels of racism. We will also explore racialized drug policies throughout U.S. history, and come to an understanding of how the drug war has fueled mass incarceration, health disparities, social inequities, and the current waves of overdose deaths in the United States. Helpful frameworks, such as the Iceberg Analogy, will allow participants to connect how certain events are fueled by underlying racial structures. Participants will also brainstorm tactics and strategies to address some of the ramifications of the War on Drugs in their own communities.
At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define the War on Drugs
- Name 2 ramifications of the War on Drugs that we see play out today
- Be able to identify the four levels of racism
- Name 2 pieces of historical legislation that have perpetuated the War on Drugs and mass incarceration
- Identify 3 strategies to address the impacts of the War on Drugs in our communities
- Challenge our own deeply held narratives as individuals and a country around drugs and drug use
Continuing education units (CEUs) will be offered in partnership with Adcare Educational Institute.

Topic: Harm reduction, Opioids, Overdose, Training
Audience: Provider, Substance Use Services, Employees, Employers/worksites, PWUD, People in recovery, General public
Drug-related stigma presents barriers to effectively supporting clients who use drugs. This three-hour training will focus on identifying our biases and societal stigma surrounding people who use drugs and actions we can take to address them.
Participants will:
- Unpack drug-related stigma at the community, individual, and structural level
- Gain a framework (ladder of inference) and tools to examine personal biases and unpack them
- Learn about the manifestations of drug-related stigma in media, policies, politics, etc.
- Develop strategies to challenge workplace/community policies and culture that perpetuate stigma
- Build skills to interrupt/challenge drug-related stigma at the interpersonal level

[IN-PERSON TRAINING] De-Escalation Techniques for Challenging Situations (CEUs)
12.02.25 - 10:00 am–1:00 pm
Topic: Harm reduction, Health & Racial Equity, Policies, Stigma, Training
Audience: Provider, Substance Use Services, Employees, Employers/worksites, PWUD, People in recovery, General public
This training builds skills around de-escalation and teaches best practices and strategies to better support people of all ages in moments of escalation. The session will explore how trauma impacts the brain and how this may lead to escalated incidents, an understanding which can be useful in preventing these situations, in the moment, as well as for debriefing and prevention. This approach is particularly useful for handling escalated situations related to substance use and posits trauma-informed de-escalation as a practical harm reductive practice. We will focus on ways we can support people through escalated feelings while prioritizing safety for all parties. We will also explore the importance of having a program that is trauma-informed, as trauma and escalation (and having difficulty regulating one’s emotions) are closely linked.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe de-escalation techniques
- Review strategies for dealing with challenging situations
- Practice dealing with challenging situations
- Identify strategies for trauma-informed care
Continuing education units (CEUs) will be offered in partnership with AdCare Educational Institute.
